21-year-old Uni student killed in motorcycle accident in Kalutara

A 21-year-old student of the University of Kelaniya has been killed in a motorcycle accident in the Waskaduwa area of Kalutara this morning (08).

The deceased has been identified as Sithum Sankalpa, a student of the Faculty of Computing and Technology at the University of Kelaniya.

Police said a group of university students had been travelling by motorcycles towards Galle on a trip when one of the students had fallen from his motorcycle and was run over by a school bus travelling in the opposite direction.

According to preliminary investigations, the victim had been travelling from Colombo towards Galle with five friends when his motorcycle veered towards the right side of the road and he fell onto the road.

He was subsequently run over by the rear wheel of a bus transporting schoolchildren travelling in the opposite direction, police said.

The student had succumbed at the scene, according to Kalutara North Police.

The accident caused heavy traffic congestion on Galle Road, which was later brought under control by police.

The driver of the bus has been arrested and is due to be produced before the Kalutara Magistrate’s Court.
