(Colombo) The Thailand Cabinet has approved the recruitment of 10,000 Sri Lankan workers due to a labor shortage in their country. This labor shortage in Thailand was caused by Cambodian workers returning to their country following a border conflict.
However, data from the International Labour Organization indicates that Thailand, due to its aging population and declining workforce, has to rely on at least 3 million registered foreign workers across the agriculture, construction, and manufacturing sectors.
As a result, plans are in place to provide employment opportunities in Thailand to workers from countries including Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bangladesh, Indonesia, and the Philippines.
Thai authorities point out that more than 30,000 workers from Sri Lanka have already registered, and in the first phase, 10,000 of them will be granted employment opportunities in Thailand. (NewsCenter)
