Cabinet approves US$1 million humanitarian donation to Nepal

The Cabinet of Ministers has approved a proposal to provide a US$1 million humanitarian donation to the government of Nepal following the devastating flash floods that struck Raghuwa District in northern Nepal on August 26.

The floods have caused significant loss of life and extensive damage to property and infrastructure, placing a severe humanitarian burden on the government and people of Nepal.

According to the government, urgent relief and recovery assistance is required as search operations for missing persons continue, the risk of further flooding remains and critical infrastructure has suffered extensive damage.

Cabinet approval was granted for a proposal submitted by the President, taking into consideration the longstanding friendly relations between Sri Lanka and Nepal, which are rooted in strong cultural, religious and people-to-people ties.

Sri Lanka’s own experience of the devastating humanitarian and economic consequences of major natural disasters was also taken into consideration in approving the humanitarian assistance, according to a statement issued by the Department of Government Information.
