The system of giving demerit points to drivers who violate traffic laws is planned to be implemented from the end of July, says Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of Traffic Control and Road Safety W. P. J. Senadheera.
The DIG stated this while participating in a workshop held in Kegalle with the participation of police officers.
He explained that this demerit point program is scheduled to be implemented with the implementation of the GovPay fine payment system islandwide.
The DIG also pointed out that nearly 300 cases have been filed against drivers who drove vehicles under the influence of drugs by 2026.
The Inspector General of Police is set to introduce a new testing device to detect toxic drugs, which will be operational from tomorrow, he said.
Furthermore, police officers have been instructed to take legal action against drivers who drive without removing unnecessary devices installed on buses and other vehicles, Mr. W. P. J. Senadheera emphasized.
