COLOMBO – Former Sri Lankan youth cricketer Akshu Fernando has passed away at the age of 34, ending a long and courageous battle following a tragic accident years ago.
Akshu was a prominent member of the Sri Lanka Under-19 squad that competed in the 2010 ICC U-19 World Cup in New Zealand. He was a contemporary of several established national stars, including Bhanuka Rajapaksa, Kithuruwan Vithanage, and Danushka Gunathilaka. Known for his talent during his school and club cricket days, his promising career was tragically cut short.
In 2018, Akshu met with a horrific accident at an unprotected railway crossing in Mount Lavinia. Since then, he had remained in a comatose state, receiving medical care for over seven years. He breathed his last today, December 30, 2025.
The cricketing community has expressed deep sorrow over the loss of a former teammate and a vibrant sportsman whose life was reshaped by a moment of misfortune.
