Community-led tree-planting activities were held in Sri Lanka on February 4 to mark Independence Day with environmental action in Colombo (Moratuwa), Kandy (Minipe–Hasalaka), and Jaffna. More than 350 citizens, youth, local government officials, and community representatives participated across the western, central, and northern parts of the country.
The initiative moved beyond traditional ceremonial observances, focusing instead on community-driven environmental action. All three locations followed a shared structure that brought together local authorities, youth groups, and civil society to promote environmental stewardship through practical engagement.
The activities were organized by international peace NGO Heavenly Culture, World Peace, Restoration of Light (HWPL) and International Peace Youth Group (IPYG). While each region reflected different social and geographical contexts, participants took part in coordinated tree-planting efforts emphasizing long-term environmental protection.
In Moratuwa near Colombo, the event involved the Moratuwa Municipal Council alongside health, administrative, and civil society representatives. The Mayor of Moratuwa noted that “environmental initiatives like this play an important role in strengthening urban sustainability, particularly when local government and civil society work together.”
In the Kandy region, youth-centered tree-planting activities were carried out in the Minipe–Hasalaka area with administrative support from local authorities, who provided facilities and logistical assistance for the event.
Jaffna saw large-scale community participation, and following the event, three Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs) were signed among participating organizations on environmental protection and community development, laying the groundwork for future collaboration.
Organizers stated that follow-up plans are in place to maintain the newly planted trees, and discussions are ongoing on sustaining community-based environmental action tailored to each region.
The organizers added that the initiative demonstrates how Independence Day can serve as a platform for coordinated, community-driven environmental efforts across multiple regions.
