
** COLOMBO **– The Sri Lankan arts community is in mourning following the passing of the veteran actor, director, and "Kalasuri" titleholder, Sathischandra Edirisinghe. He was 84 years old at the time of his demise.
According to family sources, the beloved artist passed away today while undergoing treatment for an ongoing illness at a private hospital.
A Half-Century Legacy Born on February 10, 1941, in Kelaniya, Sathischandra Edirisinghe’s contribution to Sri Lankan cinema, television, and theater spanned over 50 years. The brother of the legendary vocalist Sunil Edirisinghe, Sathischandra carved his own niche as a versatile performer and a visionary director.
Award-Winning Brilliance Though known for his extensive roles, his brilliance was often captured in brief, powerful moments. In 1986, he made headlines for winning an award for a mere 90-second performance in Gamini Fonseka’s film Keti Waligaya. His ability to convey profound emotion in limited screen time was a testament to his mastery.
In 1987, his portrayal of a Buddhist monk earned him a Special Jury Award at the prestigious Sarasaviya Film Festival.
From Stage to Screen His creative journey took flight in 1963 with his debut stage production, Bakathapas. Since then, he remained a pillar of the local creative industry, guiding younger generations and leaving behind a body of work that defined an era of Sri Lankan storytelling.
