Major Flood Condition Expected in Kelani River Low-Lying Areas

Warnings have been issued forecasting a major flood condition in the low-lying areas of the Kelani River basin.

According to the warnings, this severe flood condition is expected to affect the following Divisional Secretariat Divisions over the next 48 hours: Eheliyagoda, Norwood, Yatiyanthota, Galigamuwa, Ruwanwella, Bulathkohupitiya, Dehiowita, Seethawaka, Dompe, Padukka, Homagama, Kaduwela, Biyagama, Kolonnawa, Kelaniya, Wattala, and Colombo.

The Department of Irrigation states that heavy rainfall is currently being experienced in many areas across the catchment of the Kelani River basin.

This warning was issued following an analysis of the rainfall status, the volume of water being released from the reservoirs located in the upper Kelani River basin, and the water levels of the river gauges maintained by the Department of Irrigation within the Kelani River basin.

The public residing in these areas, as well as drivers and passengers travelling through these regions, are urged to exercise extreme care to protect lives and property. Disaster Management agencies are requested to take necessary measures immediately.
