India's selection panel, which now includes RP Singh and Pragyan Ojha, is meeting today (Saturday) to finalize the squads for the upcoming ODI and T20I tour of Australia, starting October 19. The tour—three ODIs followed by five T20Is—is highly anticipated and could mark the return of superstars Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, who have been absent from national duties since the Champions Trophy win in March.
With a relentlessly packed schedule that immediately precedes a critical Test series against South Africa, the selectors face several tough calls on balancing player workload, seeking long-term backups, and tailoring the squad for Australian conditions.
Here are the four biggest questions facing the panel:
1. Should All-Format Stars Be Given a Break?
India’s key trio—Shubman Gill, Jasprit Bumrah, and Kuldeep Yadav—are essential to all formats. Given the quick turnaround from the West Indies Test series to the Australia ODIs, followed swiftly by the South Africa Tests, managing their workload is crucial, especially with the 2027 ODI World Cup far away.
- The Case for Rest: Selectors might opt to rest these players for the Australian ODIs. If picked for the 50-over games, they could be released midway through the T20I series to ensure they are fresh for the home Tests against South Africa.
- Replacements: Should Gill be rested, Yashasvi Jaiswal is the likely replacement in the ODIs, potentially opening with Abhishek Sharma in the T20Is.
2. Who Fills the Hardik Pandya Void?
With Hardik Pandya currently nursing a left quadriceps injury and doubts surrounding his availability for Australia, finding reliable seam-bowling all-rounders is a top priority.
- T20I Options: Nitish Kumar Reddy is a strong option to partner Shivam Dube in the T20I squad.
- ODI Dilemma: The ODI replacement is less clear. As India looks ahead to the 2027 World Cup in African conditions, the Australia series provides an ideal proving ground to establish a solid backup all-rounder.
3. How Many Spinners for Australia?
India's recent white-ball squads (Asia Cup, Champions Trophy) were spin-heavy, featuring Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, and Washington Sundar. Australian pitches, however, tend to favour pace and bounce.
- Shift in Strategy: The panel is expected to reduce the number of spin all-rounders. It is improbable that both Jadeja and Axar would feature in the same ODI playing XI down under.
- Youthful Contenders: This shift could create opportunities for in-form batters and part-time spinners like Riyan Parag and Tilak Varma to strengthen the middle order. Parag and Varma have both been exceptional recently, with Varma delivering Asia Cup final heroics and Parag consistently performing for India A.
4. No Pant—Who is the Back-up Wicketkeeper?
With Rishabh Pant still recovering from a fractured foot, India needs a reliable backup wicketkeeper for KL Rahul in the ODI squad.
- The Frontrunner: Sanju Samson, whose last ODI saw him score his maiden century (December 2023), is a strong contender, likely slotting into the crucial No. 3 position if selected.
- T20I Options: While Jitesh Sharma and Dhruv Jurel have featured in recent T20I squads, their lack of a compelling List A record might count against them for the ODI format. (newscenter)
