The House of Lords has approved a proposal to ban the use of social media by children under the age of 16 in the United Kingdom.
Accordingly, an amendment to the Public Schools Bill received 261 votes in favor and 150 votes against, and opposition Lords have expressed support for the ban.
However, the British government has stated that it will seek to repeal this amendment in the House of Commons, the lower house of parliament.
The government has also indicated that it is implementing a separate public consultation process on the ban on social media for children under the age of 16.
If implemented, this proposal will be an important new step towards the online safety of children in Britain and the responsibility of social media companies, political and social analysts say.
