COLOMBO — Supreme Court Judge S. Thurairajah has been appointed as a member of the Judicial Service Commission (JSC), according to a statement from the commission. This appointment adds to the senior-level leadership of the body responsible for safeguarding judicial independence in Sri Lanka.
The Judicial Service Commission, as established under the Constitution, is tasked with the appointment, promotion, transfer, and disciplinary control of judges and judicial officers in the lower courts. The commission is composed of the Chief Justice as Chairman and two other Supreme Court judges appointed by the President.
Justice Thurairajah has a distinguished legal career spanning decades. He was a lawyer and a sitting puisne justice of the Supreme Court of Sri Lanka, having been sworn in on January 9, 2019. Prior to his elevation to the Supreme Court, he served as a justice of the Court of Appeal of Sri Lanka. He also served as a high court judge in Fiji. His appointment as a President's Counsel was in 2016.
He holds a Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of Colombo and a Master of Laws from the University of London. Before his judicial appointments, he joined the Attorney General's Department in 1989 and rose through the ranks to become Senior State Counsel, Deputy Solicitor General, and Additional Solicitor General.
