Four individuals, including a senior official of the TVK (Tamizhaga Vetri Kazhagam) party led by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Joseph Vijay, who planned to smuggle narcotics from India to Sri Lanka by sea, have been arrested by intelligence agencies in India.
Indian media reported that 100 kilograms of narcotics were found in their possession.
Among those arrested is N. Bhupalan, a 42-year-old executive committee member of the Nagapattinam District wing of the TVK party in Tamil Nadu.
Acting on a tip-off that narcotics were being trafficked from Nagapattinam to Sri Lanka, Indian security forces raided and searched the house of one of the suspects yesterday (16) morning.
Following information uncovered during that raid, another team of officials searched the house of Bhupalan, who is considered the mastermind behind this drug smuggling ring, leading to the recovery of the drug stockpile.
Additionally, officials suspect that the fact Bhupalan's wife is a Sri Lankan national may have facilitated this illegal drug operation.
