
A woman and her niece have been killed after being struck by a train near the Kalutara Railway Station at around 4:30 a.m. today (16), police said.
The victims were reportedly walking along the railway tracks to reach the platform on the southern side of Kalutara South Railway Station, intending to board a train to Anuradhapura, when they were hit by a service train travelling from Maradana towards Galle.
According to a railway official, the woman, her daughter and another female relative were planning to attend a religious event in Anuradhapura. The woman and her niece died in the incident.
The group had allegedly been walking along the railway tracks in an unsafe manner when they were struck by the train.
The bodies of the two deceased women were placed at Kalutara South Railway Station and are due to be taken to the Kalutara Teaching Hospital for further proceedings.
Kalutara South Police are conducting further investigations into the incident.
