
U.S. Special Envoy for South and Central Asia Sergio Gor arrived in Sri Lanka as part of an official visit aimed at strengthening regional cooperation in the Indian Ocean.
According to a statement released by the U.S. Department of State, the Special Envoy will undertake a series of high-level engagements in Sri Lanka and the Maldives from March 19 to 24.
During his stay in Sri Lanka, Envoy Gor is scheduled to meet with senior government leaders to reaffirm the importance of the longstanding U.S.-Sri Lanka partnership.
Discussions are expected to focus on strengthening cooperation across key sectors.
The visit will also support U.S. efforts to safeguard vital sea lanes and secure ports in the Indian Ocean region, while reinforcing mutually beneficial trade and commercial ties.
Officials noted that the engagements are aligned with broader efforts to promote a free, open, and prosperous Indo-Pacific region for the benefit of both nations.
Following his engagements in Sri Lanka, Envoy Gor will travel to the Maldives, where he will meet with senior government officials to further strengthen bilateral relations.
Talks in the Maldives will focus on enhancing security cooperation, supporting the country’s critical infrastructure development, and exploring opportunities to expand its economy.
The visit also coincides with the commemoration of 60 years of diplomatic relations between the United States and the Maldives.
