Colombo, Sri Lanka — The Department of Prisons has launched an immediate investigation following an exposé by the News Center regarding a viral video that allegedly shows inmates enjoying illicit privileges and a "comfortable environment" inside a correctional facility.
The video has caused a major stir as it appears to show inmates, identified as notorious figures "Unawatune Kadiya" and "Ahungalle Anta," engaging in illegal activities.
The disturbing footage reportedly shows the inmates watching content on a mobile phone—a highly restricted item—and also appears to depict them using narcotics inside the prison walls.
Adding to the controversy, the video captures one inmate receiving a head massage from another inmate who is holding the mobile phone, suggesting a relaxed environment and possible disregard for prison regulations.
The Department of Prisons confirmed that a formal investigation has been initiated to ascertain the authenticity of the video and the location where the incident occurred.
While the Superintendent of the Boossa Prison has categorically confirmed that the footage did not originate from their facility, the Prisons Department is taking a comprehensive approach to the inquiry.
The Superintendents of the Boossa, Galle, and Angunakolapelessa prisons have all been notified and directed to submit urgent reports regarding the incident, as authorities scramble to determine the source of the breach and identify any personnel responsible for facilitating the illegal activities.
