The Minister of Public Administration, Provincial Councils and Local Government, Professor Chandana Abeyratne, has informed the Chief Prelates of Malwatte and Asgiri that it has been decided to hold the state Vesak festival on May 30th this year.
Speaking to the media, the Minister stated that this decision was taken on the recommendations of the Poya Committee, taking into account the request of the Tri-Sectarian Chief Prelates.
However, the Tri-Sectarian Chief Prelates have written to the President stating that it is not appropriate to use that date as Vesak Poya since the Visa Nekatha is not being applied on May 01st.
Accordingly, the Poya Committee met on the instructions of the President and agreed to hold the state Vesak festival on May 30th, Professor Chandana Abeyratne stated.
