COLOMBO, Sri Lanka - The report and recommendations of the committee appointed to look into the repeal of the Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA) have been officially handed over to the Minister of Justice, Mr. Harshana Nanayakkara.
The presentation was made by the Chairman of the Committee, President's Counsel Rienzie Arsecularatne, to the Minister today.
The handover of this report is a critical step in the ongoing process to review and potentially replace the controversial PTA, which has been subject to intense local and international scrutiny for its sweeping provisions and perceived abuse. The Committee was tasked with examining the implications of repealing the act and proposing suitable legal alternatives that address national security concerns while upholding democratic freedoms and human rights.
The contents of the report, including the specific recommendations put forth by President's Counsel Arsecularatne and his committee, are expected to be reviewed by the Ministry of Justice before being presented to the Cabinet for further legislative action. (NewsCenter)
