Colombo, Sri Lanka — It is reported that former President Ranil Wickremesinghe is scheduled to make a special statement on the upcoming 6th. This announcement is expected to take place during the party convention, also set for the 6th.
This comes after former President Wickremesinghe was released on bail on the 26th, after being held in remand custody under the Public Property Act. Fort Magistrate Nilupuli Lankapura granted the order after considering medical reports submitted on his behalf. The magistrate ordered his release on three personal bail bonds of Rs. 5 million each, following submissions by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and his defense lawyers.
The former President was arrested by the CID on the 22nd in connection with charges under the Public Property Act, related to the alleged misuse of state funds. He was produced before the Fort Magistrate's Court on the same day and was ordered to be remanded until the 26th.
Due to his health condition, he was initially admitted to the prison hospital and, on the following day, was transferred to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the Colombo National Hospital based on medical recommendations. Former President Ranil Wickremesinghe was discharged from the hospital yesterday, the 29th, after receiving treatment in the ICU. (newscenter)
