
COLOMBO / MANAMA, Bahrain — Sri Lankan athlete Lahiru Achintha has etched his name into the history books by winning the nation’s first-ever Gold Medal at the Asian Youth Athletics Championships, currently underway in Bahrain.
Competing in the Men's 1500m event held today (October 23), Achintha displayed exceptional endurance and speed, crossing the finish line with a winning time of 3 minutes, 57.42 seconds (3:57.42).
This monumental achievement marks the first time a Sri Lankan athlete has secured the top position on the podium at this prestigious continental youth event.
The success continued for the island nation in the mid-distance events, with Nethmi Gimhani successfully securing a Bronze Medal in the Women's 1500m event. Her performance adds to Sri Lanka’s medal tally and highlights the emerging talent in the country's youth athletic cohort.
