In a sarcastic jab at the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Mohsin Naqvi and Army Chief General Asim Munir, former Prime Minister Imran Khan has mockingly suggested that they should bat as openers for Pakistan to have any chance of defeating India.
According to his sister, Aleema Khan, Imran's remarks were made in response to Pakistan's consecutive losses to India in the ongoing Asia Cup. He quipped that the only way for Pakistan to win would be if General Munir and Naqvi opened the innings, with former Chief Justice of Pakistan Qazi Faez Isa and Chief Election Commissioner Sikandar Sultan Raja serving as umpires. He further suggested that Islamabad High Court Chief Justice Sarfaraz Dogar could act as the third umpire.
Aleema Khan stated that she had informed her brother of the team's recent defeats, which prompted his cynical comments. Imran Khan, who led Pakistan to its 1992 Cricket World Cup victory, has been highly critical of Naqvi, accusing him of "incompetence" and "nepotism" for the perceived decline of Pakistan's cricket.
The 72-year-old founder of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has also previously accused General Munir of interfering in the February 2024 general elections to steal his party's mandate, with alleged assistance from then-CJP Isa and Election Commissioner Raja. Imran Khan has been in jail since August 2023, facing multiple legal cases.
