COLOMBO – In a significant show of regional solidarity, India has agreed to expand its upcoming tour of Sri Lanka to support recovery efforts following the devastating Cyclone Ditwah.
Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) Chairman Shammi Silva confirmed that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has consented to play additional T20 International matches during their scheduled tour in August. These matches will be integrated into the tour which also features the ICC World Test Championship series.
Solidarity After Cyclone Ditwah The decision comes as Sri Lanka struggles to rebuild after Cyclone Ditwah caused widespread destruction, displacing hundreds of thousands and damaging vital infrastructure. "The additional T20Is are a gesture of solidarity from India in the aftermath of the cyclone," Silva stated.
He further revealed that India was prepared to fly in as early as late December for two fundraising matches, but logistical hurdles—specifically the lack of a broadcaster on such short notice—prevented those games from taking place.
Ongoing Relief Efforts SLC is actively leveraging international cricket to generate funds for disaster victims. In addition to the upcoming Indian tour, Chairman Silva noted that revenue generated from the scheduled T20I series against Pakistan will also be donated toward relief and rebuilding initiatives.
The additional matches in August are expected to significantly boost SLC's ability to contribute to the national recovery fund while providing fans with more high-octane cricket between the two rivals.
