(Dubai) Sri Lanka secured their place in the Asia Cup Super Four stage with a decisive six-wicket victory over Afghanistan in Abu Dhabi, a result that also knocked their opponents out of the tournament.
Sri Lanka's victory was anchored by a masterful innings from opener Kusal Mendis, who scored a perfectly-paced 74 not out off 52 balls. His performance ensured Sri Lanka not only qualified but also allowed Bangladesh to advance from Group B. They now join Group A qualifiers India and Pakistan in the next stage.
Earlier, Afghanistan looked to be in trouble after slipping to 79-6 in the 13th over. However, Mohammad Nabi revived their innings with a blistering 60 off just 22 balls, an effort that included five consecutive sixes off the first five balls of the 20th over, bowled by Dunith Wellalage. Nabi was run out on the final ball of the innings, but his heroic hitting helped Afghanistan post a respectable total of 169-8. For Sri Lanka, Nuwan Thushara was the standout bowler, finishing with impressive figures of 4-18.
In their chase, Sri Lanka needed only 101 runs to secure their qualification based on net run-rate, but they went on to win the match outright with eight balls to spare. A quick-fire cameo from Kamindu Mendis, who hit two sixes in his 13-ball innings, sealed the victory.
The Super Four stage will begin on Saturday with a clash between Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. The highly anticipated match between India and Pakistan is scheduled for Sunday in Dubai, with the final set for September 28.
