Legal hurdles delay extradition of Arjuna Mahendran

Legal hurdles exist to extraditing former Central Bank Governor Arjuna Mahendran, who is wanted by the court in connection with the Central Bank bond case, and authorities are examining other legal avenues, Minister of Public Security and Parliamentary Affairs Ananda Wijepala stated.

A national newspaper reported today (28) that the Minister said Arjuna Mahendran, residing in Singapore as a citizen of that country, changed his name.

The Minister mentioned that under Singaporean law, there is no capability to bring a citizen of that country to Sri Lanka.

The Minister mentioned that there are various strategies to be followed in such situations, and steps are being taken accordingly to bring Arjuna Mahendran to this country.

The newspaper reported that the Minister mentioned the court case regarding the bond fraud is ongoing, through which information regarding certain matters is being revealed.

Information received by the Criminal Investigation Department revealed that Arjuna Mahendran changed his legal name to 'Harjan Alexander'.

The newspaper further noted that the Criminal Investigation Department took necessary steps to issue a Red Notice for Arjuna Mahendran through Interpol, and he changed his name alongside that.
