Athula Kaluarachchi has resigned from his positions as Chairman of the Mahara Pradeshiya Sabha and as a member representing his electoral ward, where the National People's Power (NPP) holds power.
He announced his decision in a statement published on his social media account, stating that the move was not sudden but had been made in accordance with an understanding reached with the party several years ago.
Kaluarachchi stressed that his resignation from the two positions did not mean abandoning his political objectives or ending his commitment to public service.
In his statement, he said he had accepted the political responsibility with the aim of defeating family-based political rule and contributing to the establishment of a people-centred system of governance.
He further noted that following the achievement of what he described as a historic political objective on September 21, 2024, the country had established a strong foundation for accelerated development while creating opportunities for a new generation of capable young leaders to assume greater responsibilities.
Explaining the reasons behind his resignation, Kaluarachchi said he intended to devote more time and attention to reorganising his professional affairs and career, in keeping with the agreement previously reached with the party.
He emphasised that although his political positions would change, his commitment to politics and responsibility towards the people who had placed their trust in him would remain unchanged.
He also expressed his appreciation to those who had worked alongside him and continued to support him despite various challenges. Concluding his statement, Kaluarachchi said political positions were temporary, but the objectives they represented and the commitment to the people would remain everlasting.
