Colombo: The Sri Lanka Navy has successfully intercepted a multi-day fishing trawler in a deep-sea operation conducted west of the island, seizing a significant consignment of narcotics. The operation resulted in the arrest of six individuals suspected of being involved in the maritime drug trafficking attempt.
The Navy’s operation was launched based on intelligence reports regarding a suspicious vessel operating far from the coastline. The naval patrol successfully cornered and boarded the multi-day trawler in the deep international waters west of Sri Lanka’s mainland.
Vessel Brought to Shore A spokesperson for the Navy confirmed that the six suspects were taken into immediate custody. The trawler, which is currently loaded with the seized narcotics, is now being escorted back to shore, where the exact quantity and type of drugs will be officially determined by law enforcement agencies.
This bust highlights the persistent threat of drug trafficking utilizing Sri Lanka’s vast maritime territory. Fishing trawlers are frequently exploited by international criminal networks as transit vessels to ferry large quantities of drugs, primarily heroin and crystal methamphetamine (Ice), to the island nation and onwards to international markets.
Upon docking, the suspects and the seized narcotics will be handed over to the Police Narcotics Bureau (PNB) and the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) for joint further investigation into the origin and destination of the consignment, and the organized network behind the operation.
