Abu Dhabi – Sri Lanka produced a commanding all-round performance to defeat Bangladesh by 6 wickets in the 5th match of the Men's T20 Asia Cup on Saturday. A clinical bowling display was followed by a masterful run-chase, led by half-centuries from Pathum Nissanka and Kamil Mishara, as Sri Lanka reached their target of 140 with 32 balls to spare.
Opting to field first after winning the toss, Sri Lanka's bowlers immediately vindicated their captain's decision. Nuwan Thushara and Dushmantha Chameera dismantled the Bangladeshi top order, leaving them reeling at 11 for 3. The slide continued as Wanindu Hasaranga (2/25) claimed two crucial wickets, including that of captain Litton Das (28), reducing Bangladesh to a dismal 53 for 5.
However, a superb rearguard action from Jaker Ali (41*) and Shamim Hossain (42*) saved Bangladesh from complete collapse. The pair put on an unbeaten 86-run partnership for the sixth wicket, showing grit and determination to guide their team to a respectable total of 139 for 5 in their 20 overs.
In pursuit of the modest target, Sri Lanka lost Kusal Mendis early, but any hopes for a Bangladeshi comeback were quickly extinguished by a match-winning 95-run partnership between Pathum Nissanka and Kamil Mishara. Nissanka was the aggressor, striking a brilliant 50 off just 34 balls, including six fours and a six.
Mishara played the perfect supporting role, anchoring the chase and remaining unbeaten on 46 from 32 balls. Despite a few late wickets, the result was never in doubt. Bangladesh's cause was hampered by an indisciplined performance with the ball, conceding 21 extras, which eased the pressure on the Sri Lankan batters. Ultimately, Sri Lanka crossed the finish line in just 14.4 overs, securing a dominant and well-deserved victory.
