Red alert issued for strong winds, rough seas; Fishing community advised to avoid sea areas

The Department of Meteorology has issued a “Red” level advisory for strong winds and rough seas for sea areas extending from Matara to Pottuvil via Hambantota.

Accordingly, naval and fishing communities are advised not to venture into these sea areas, until further notice.

The advisory, issued today (09), will remain in effect until 7.00 a.m. tomorrow (10).

According to the Met. Department, the sea areas off the coasts extending from Matara to Pottuvil via Hambantota will be very rough at times with strong gusty winds up to 60 kmph.

Meanwhile, the sea areas off the coasts extending from Chilaw via Trincomalee, Kankasanthurai and Mannar, and from Galle to Matara will be rough at times with strong gusty winds up to 50 kmph, it added.
