Gampaha: The 46-year-old woman arrested following a public disturbance where she obstructed police officers and drove away from a traffic stop has been ordered to be held in further remand custody.
The Gampaha Magistrate's Court, after considering the facts presented today, ordered that the suspect be remanded until November 10th.
The incident, which gained public attention after being partially captured on video, occurred when traffic police attempted to stop the woman's vehicle for a traffic violation. The resident of Dematagoda, who was driving the car, reportedly refused to comply with police orders and drove off.
During the initial arrest and subsequent reporting, the woman allegedly acted belligerently and falsely claimed to be the sister of a Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police (SDIG) to evade legal action. It was later confirmed by police that she had no relation to the high-ranking officer.
The suspect is facing charges including reckless driving, failure to obey police orders, criminal intimidation, and impersonation. Her continued detention underscores the severity with which the courts are treating cases of obstruction of law enforcement duty.
