Flood warning issued for low-lying areas of Mahaweli River

The Irrigation Department has warned of possible major flood situations in low-lying areas of the Pasbage Korale Divisional Secretariat Division along the Mahaweli Ganga due to recent heavy rainfall, urging the public to remain vigilant.

Due to heavy rainfall received in the upper catchment areas of the Mahaweli River over the past few hours, there is a risk of severe flooding in the low-lying areas around the Mahaweli River within the Pasbage Korale Divisional Secretariat Division, the Department said.

Residents living in these areas and drivers using roads passing through these locations are urged to exercise extreme caution.

The public residing close to the Mahaweli River in these areas is also requested to remain highly vigilant and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety in the event of flooding, it added.

The relevant disaster management authorities are requested to take necessary measures in this regard.
