Gampaha Magistrate refers IGP for contempt of court proceedings

Gampaha Magistrate Bandula Gunaratne has referred a file to the President of the Court of Appeal to initiate legal proceedings against the Inspector General of Police (IGP) over alleged contempt of court.

The file was referred after the Magistrate determined that the IGP had possibly committed contempt of court by failing to comply with court orders.

The decision follows the IGP’s alleged failure to comply with court orders relating to two drug cases.

The Magistrate stated that the failure had undermined the authority of the court and that the IGP appeared to be attempting to mislead the court.
