No Tsunami threat to Sri Lanka following 7.7-magnitude Indian Ocean earthquake

The Department of Meteorology has issued a No Tsunami Threat Bulletin following a magnitude 7.7 earthquake that occurred in the Indian Ocean early this morning (15), confirming that there is currently no tsunami threat to Sri Lanka.

According to the bulletin issued by the Met. Department, the earthquake occurred today at a depth of 14 kilometres, with its location identified as the Flores Region of Indonesia, at coordinates 8.51°S latitude and 121.39°E longitude.

The Department stated that Sri Lanka’s coastal areas are currently safe, adding that the bulletin was issued in consultation with relevant national and international agencies.
