COLOMBO — Sri Lanka Customs today gave an undertaking to the Court of Appeal to release 506 detained BYD electric vehicles (EVs), following a petition filed by the importer, John Keells Holdings PLC. The decision was announced during a court hearing, where Customs officials agreed to release the vehicles on the condition that additional bank guarantees are provided.
The fleet of 506 vehicles, which had been held by Customs, will now be released to the importer. This development comes after a legal challenge from John Keells Holdings PLC, which sought the release of the EVs. The agreement reached in court marks a significant step toward resolving the dispute and getting the vehicles on the road.
This news is expected to be a positive development for the local electric vehicle market, as the release of a large number of EVs will increase their availability to consumers.
