Colombo, Sri Lanka — The United National Party (UNP) has decided to lift the party suspension imposed on its former members who joined the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB). This decision comes ahead of the UNP's party convention scheduled for September 6.
The UNP plans to hold its convention at the Colombo Exhibition and Convention Centre and has extended invitations to former Presidents, Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa, and all other opposition party leaders. Party leader and former President Ranil Wickremesinghe is expected to deliver a special statement during the event.
However, a senior SJB member, speaking to News Center on the matter, expressed that the UNP membership no longer holds any relevance for them. He voiced suspicion that Wickremesinghe's latest move might be an attempt to stall a common agreement, as he has allegedly done in the past.
Despite the skepticism, the senior SJB member acknowledged that there are a group of sincere leaders within the UNP who genuinely believe the two parties should unite.
