COLOMBO — An atmospheric disturbance over the eastern seas has intensified into a well-marked low-pressure area, posing a threat of heavy rain and strong winds across Sri Lanka, the Department of Meteorology has confirmed.
The weather system is anticipated to develop further and track in a west-northwesterly direction, moving closer to the island nation.
The Department has issued a strong advisory for sea areas affected by the system. Conditions are expected to be rough to very rough due to heavy thundershowers and winds gusting intermittently up to (55-65) kmph.
The naval and fishing communities are strongly urged to exercise extreme caution or refrain from venturing into these sea areas until the system passes.
The low-pressure system will significantly impact weather across the island, particularly in the coming days. The Department forecasts intermittent rain or thundershowers in the following provinces:
Crucially, rainfall exceeding 100 mm is likely in some areas within these provinces. Other parts of the island can expect rain or thundershowers to develop after 1:00 PM.
In addition to heavy rain, the following areas can expect moderate to strong winds, intermittently reaching speeds of (30-40) kmph:
The public is requested to take all necessary measures to safeguard themselves and property against lightning and the temporary strong winds associated with the thundershowers. (NewsCenter)
