Currently, 43,553 nurses are engaged in the health service in the country, says Minister of Health and Mass Media Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa.
Although this is 30 percent of the total health workforce, the Minister stated that the number of nurses required for the health service has not yet been completed.
The Minister also stated that a large number of more nurses are needed for the health service in this country to provide optimal health service according to internationally accepted standards and that there is a need to follow the proper methodology when recruiting nurses.
Minister Nalinda Jayatissa said this while participating in a ceremony held at Temple Trees today (14) to recruit 2918 students for nursing training.
The Minister further stated that when these students recruited for nursing training today enter the service, a major transformation will have taken place in the country's healthcare system.
