Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya says that steps will be taken to introduce a new syllabus for preschools in 2027, train teachers for it, and regulate preschools through a regulatory authority.
Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya stated this while participating in an awareness program for preschool teachers in the Hambantota District on educational reforms held at the Ambalantota Pradeshiya Sabha Auditorium today (15).
At this event, the Prime Minister informed preschool teachers about the problems they are facing, and then Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya, who spoke, said,
The problems in the preschool system cannot be discussed separately from the crisis in society and education as a whole. When we took over this country in 2024, our main challenge was to free the country from debt and set the right economic criteria correctly.
Accordingly, despite a challenging year in 2025, we were able to bring our country to a certain level of economic stability and thereby balance the country's budget.
The war in the Middle East began while the country was developing its economy. It has also had some impact on our country.
Most of the foreign remittances to our country came from our brothers and sisters who served in the Middle East. Today, their lives and jobs are threatened.
Most of the foreign tourists came to our country through the Middle East airspace, and due to the closure of those air routes and airports, the number of tourists has also decreased. Another problem is the problem of fuel transportation, this problem has affected our country as well as many countries. If the war continues, we will be hit hard.
Therefore, we must prepare for it. We must minimize the costs of managing the economy to some extent.
We can borrow, but we do not have the hope of destroying the country's economy by borrowing.
You know that we have started educational reform. The same policy states that we are also working to reform preschool education. So far, preschools and early childhood development have not been implemented in a systematic manner.
We have had to regulate and standardize all preschools, which is not an easy task.
First, all preschools must be formally registered. We have currently prepared a curriculum for teacher training. We are also working to introduce a new curriculum for preschools in 2027, train teachers for it, and regulate preschools through a regulatory authority.
An accepted curriculum has been prepared for the preschool diploma. In the future, we will give priority to preschool teachers accordingly. We are taking steps to develop the professionalism of preschool teachers and establish a salary scale.
The Prime Minister said that pre-schools belong to the Provincial Council and the Pradeshiya Sabha and that the line ministry can only make recommendations and that structural committees and district development committees should work in a planned manner to resolve issues related to pre-schools.
A large number of public representatives including Member of Parliament Nihal Galappaththi and pre-school teachers from the Hambantota district participated in this event.
