
The Sub-Inspector in charge of the team that arrested the suspect involved in the Ambalangoda Police Station incident has been transferred from the station with immediate effect.
According to the police, a special investigation has been launched into the incident on the orders of the Inspector General of Police (IGP), conducted under the supervision of the Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) in charge of the Galle Division. Consequently, the investigation is being led by a senior police officer serving outside the Elpitiya Police Division, to which the Ambalangoda Police Station belongs.
A video circulating on social media shows an individual acting disruptively inside the Ambalangoda Police Station, alleging that police officers had assaulted his arrested father.
Police stated that the elderly man identified as the father in the video was arrested on the night of the 24th by Ambalangoda Police officers for wandering on the road while intoxicated and behaving in a disorderly manner. The police added that video footage indicates the individual attempted to flee during the arrest, resulting in a fall that caused injuries and bleeding.
However, the man was admitted to the Balapitiya Hospital by Ambalangoda Police officers today (25). Following an examination by the Judicial Medical Officer (JMO), he was produced before the Balapitiya Additional Magistrate, who ordered his release on bail.
Police further noted that subsequent actions will be taken based on the results of the ongoing special investigation.
