Women health workers in Mannar have launched a protest in Mannar town, alleging that women do not have proper security due to death threats from gold thieves. The participants in this protest, which was held yesterday (21), started a demonstration in front of the Mannar District Health Medical Officer's office and marched through the town, and finally handed over a special message to the Mannar police authorities, including the Senior Superintendent of Police. A family health worker in Mannar who was returning home after finishing her work was abducted by gold thieves who took her to a deserted place, threatened her, intimidated her and stole gold jewelry worth about nine hundred thousand rupees from her and fled. This protest was organized on the grounds that the police had not been able to arrest the thieves even though the gold jewelry of women and women in Mannar had been stolen by the gang on four previous occasions. Health officials in Mannar say that this gang of robbers is organized and that they come with their faces covered with masks and engage in looting these gold items. They also point out that the looting of gold items has also increased due to the high price of a pound of gold these days.
