COLOMBO – In a major boost to Sri Lanka’s recovery efforts, the Government of India has pledged a comprehensive financial package of USD 450 million to rebuild regions devastated by Cyclone Ditwah.
The announcement was made by Indian External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar during a joint press briefing held in Colombo today, following high-level discussions with the Sri Lankan leadership.
A Commitment to Reconstruction The aid package is specifically designed to support the reconstruction of critical infrastructure, housing, and agricultural sectors that suffered severe damage during the late November cyclone. Dr. Jaishankar emphasized that this assistance reflects India’s "Neighborhood First" policy and its unwavering solidarity with the people of Sri Lanka during times of crisis.
Strengthening Bilateral Ties The Minister noted that India is prepared to offer technical expertise alongside financial aid to ensure a swift and resilient rebuilding process. This move follows a World Bank report which estimated the total physical damage from the cyclone at approximately USD 4.1 billion.
This USD 450 million commitment is expected to provide immediate relief to the government's recovery budget, focusing on the hardest-hit provinces. (NewsCenter)
