Colombo-Sri Lanka The Sri Lankan government is reportedly considering handing over the official residence on Wijerama Mawatha in Colombo, currently occupied by former President Mahinda Rajapaksa, to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), according to a report by Lankadeepa newspaper.
Sources indicate that this matter was discussed during a recent meeting with high-ranking government officials. The government recently presented a new bill to parliament aimed at removing certain privileges of former presidents. The government hopes to pass this bill in the near future.
Once the bill is passed, it would abolish all facilities for former presidents except their pensions, including official residences. The Supreme Court's decision regarding the bill on former presidents' entitlements is expected to be handed over to the Speaker of Parliament imminently.
Before Mahinda Rajapaksa, the Wijerama Mawatha official residence was occupied by former President Maithripala Sirisena. Several other ministers had also resided there before him. (NewsCenter)
